Hebrew Newspaper Imagines New War between Egypt and Israel with Occupation of Parts of Sinai

The Israeli Haaretz newspaper presented a hypothetical scenario of a new war between Egypt and Israel if the Netanyahu-led government waged a war on the Gaza Strip and caused the death of many civilians. This could prompt Egypt to send troops to help the Palestinians, but if those Egyptians were killed, the Egyptian forces would cross the Suez Canal and spread all over Sinai. Oren pointed out that the Israeli army benefited from the peace treaty with Egypt, reduced its military budgets for the southern front and canceled the South Brigade, whose only mission was to ward off any possible Egyptian attack. Now, though, the Israeli Army Staff is regretting that choice and is preparing to reform the Brigade soon.

This comes as a poll revealed that 89% of Israelis wish to see their army re-occupy Sinai, either totally or partially. The poll, conducted by the center for democracy of the Israeli Knesset, showed that 33% of the Israelis interviewed believed their country should re-occupy the entire Sinai Peninsula, while 19% backed a re-occupation of most of the peninsula, 29% of a large part of it, and 8% of a small part, while the remaining 11% did not support the occupation of any part of Sinai, no matter how small it was.
