Iran sanctions, Obama's charade

Two leading American political analysts downplay US claims about "most significant sanctions" against Iran, saying they jeopardize Washington's position globally.

In an article titled "Obama's charade on Iran sanctions," Flynt Leverett and Hillary Mann Leverett said the text of the new UN sanctions resolution showed it was neither "a great diplomatic achievement" nor "a serious intensification of international pressure on Iran over the nuclear issue.”

The article was published on the authors' official, website , on June 9 and hours before the UN Security Council voted in favor of a fourth round of sanctions against Iran.

The Leveretts said while the sanctions might bring victory for the US in "a narrow, tactical battle" for the US President Barack Obama's administration, it will be at the cost of "America's long term strategic position, in the Middle East and globally.”

The authors said the resolution will not ban "the capacity of the Islamic Republic to produce and export hydrocarbons." Neither is there any "sanctions barring the extension of financial services, insurance, reinsurance, etc. to Iranian individuals and entities," they added.

The authors dismiss US claims that the new sanctions are broader and tougher than previous ones as "political theater" and say, "...the Obama Administration is no longer interested in finding a solution to the Iranian nuclear issue-if it ever was.”

The Leveretts conclude that the Obama administration's next step will be the "formal adoption of regime change as the explicit goal of its Iran policy-and/or military strikes against the Islamic Republic.”
