Europeans to protest austere economy

Workers from across Europe are to take part in a major demonstration in the EU capital, Brussels, to protest austerity measures being adopted by the bloc of nations.

Europeans protesting the so-called austerity measures will take to the streets of Brussels on Wednesday in order to demonstrate against wage and pension cuts and diminishing job opportunities.

The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), one of EU's leading unions, has expressed hope to gather around 100,000 people from some 30 countries to take part in the protest.

“Cutting in a recession is crazy and we must fight it,” AFP quoted John Monks, ETUC's general secretary, as saying on Tuesday.

Protests were also planned in Portugal, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Serbia, Romania, Poland, Ireland and France.

The rallies coincide with a general strike in Spain where the government has frozen pensions and cut the salaries of government workers.

“This is the worst economic crisis in the post-war history of Western Europe,” Monks added.

"We call for a rethink and a change -- in Spain and in Europe -- on September 29. We are mobilizing, they will have to listen to us,” he further explained.

The European workers are the main victims of a financial crisis set off by bankers and traders

Many European governments have imposed reductions in wages, pensions and employment to deal with escalating economic issues.
